Fr. Matt Himes
Chaplain
Fr. Matt is a priest of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. He grew up in Perry Hall / Baltimore and received a Bachelors of Science in Education from Mount St. Mary’s University and Masters of Education at Boston College before entering St. Mary’s Seminary & University where he graduated with a Masters of Divinity and was ordained a priest in 2019. Fr. Matt became the chaplain of the Catholic Retrievers and Associate Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese of Baltimore in July 2022. On January 10, 2026, Fr. Matt left his role in the Vocations Office and was assigned by Archbishop Lori as the Chaplain of the UMBC Catholic Retrievers full-time!

Christy Oberst
Campus Minister
Christy grew up in Timonium, Maryland. She graduated from Towson University ‘12 with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology and Cultural Anthropology. During college, she went on a short-term mission trip to Nigeria and it changed her life. She discerned within a missionary religious order for a time, and loved her formation in Theology and Philosophy. She is so excited to start this next adventure as Campus Minister!

Timothy Shaia
Campus Ministry Assistant
Timothy grew up in Odenton, Maryland but now lives in West Baltimore. Timothy converted to Catholicism at the Easter Vigil 2024. He was President of the Catholic Retrievers before graduating in December 2025 with a degree in Economics.

Joe Anderson
Volunteer OCIA Coordinator & Bookkeeper
Joe is a great support to our ministry as our bookkeeper and coordinator of our OCIA formation for students who want to receive sacraments / enter the Catholic Church.

Pascal Atunzu
Pastoral Year Seminarian
Pascal Atunzu is a seminarian of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Originally from Nigeria, he graduated with a baking degree from the Culinary Institute of America before entering seminary in 2019, where he received a Bachelor of Philosophy from Catholic University of America and currently at St. Mary’s Seminary and University pursuing a Masters of Divinity. He is thrilled to be with the faith filled community of Catholic Retrievers.

Annamarie grew up in Ellicott City, Maryland, not far from UMBC.
Fun Fact: Annamarie has a striking resemblance to St. Jacinta (one of the children of Fatima).

Dr. Tara Carpenter
Faculty Advisor
Dr. Carpenter is a great support to our ministry and an active member of Our Lady of Victory Parish in Arbutus. She is the Principal Lecturer of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Her office is in MEYR 112.

Dcn. (Dr.) Chuck Bieberich
Professor of Biology & Permanent Deacon
Dcn. Chuck works as a biology professor at UMBC but also serves the Catholic Retriever community primarily by serving our daily Masses. His office is in 4th Floor ILSB.
